Lateral Elbow Pushups

Description:

A popular movement in the aerobic gymnastics realm, Lateral Elbow Pushups are four-step pushups that primarily target the triceps.  Similar to lateral pushups, these pushups help develop upper body strength while also improving reflex and coordination.  For this particular version, ensure that fingers are slightly pointed inward so that it is easier to drop the elbows/forearm onto the ground during the descent phase.

Process:

  • begin in a standard pushup position and ensure that shoulders are stacked over the elbows and hands
  • core should be engaged and fingers pointed slightly inward
  • bend both elbows to descend upper body until it is in line with the elbows
  • when upper body hits the height of elbows, carefully drop one elbow/forearm to the ground
  • as soon as the arm hits the ground, push down and away against the ground to return body back to center while maintaining and bent elbow position
  • once back to center, extend elbows to return to original pushup position
  • alternate sides with each pushup
  • a tight body position should be maintained at all times and ensure that the torso remains parallel to the ground at all times
