Straddled-L Hold on Parallel Bars

Description:

A Straddled-L Hold is an exercise that activates the abdominal muscles as well as the hip flexors.  Similar to the L-hold, this position is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque skills in the sport of gymnastics for its display of strength, balance, and flexibility.  In order to perform a technically-sound straddled-L, ensure that hip flexors are strengthened and you possess ample flexibility in the pancake position.

Process:

  • begin in a squatted straddle position with hands on parallel bars
  • ensure that arms are locked out and push down against the parallettes or parallel bars
  • engage abs and hip flexors to slowly lift up legs
  • ensure knees are straight and lift legs as high as possible
